Utahns Pledge Their Devotion To The Planet With Love Notes To The Earth
Writing down your dreams and goals is an important first step towards achieving them. And now that concept is part of an exhibit called “Love Notes to the Earth.” It’s a public commitment ritual to look after our environment.
Decorative prayer flags are hanging around the Gallivan Center with comments written on each of them, pledging people’s goals to care for our planet. Individuals write their response to the following lead-in, "Dear Earth, I know I have not been treating you well. I want to change our relationship. From this point on, I promise to ____"
Organizers hope to display 1000 pledge flags which will be hung on green LED lights strung throughout the trees in the plaza. They hope to have compact florescent bulbs donated or purchased at wholesale to give to those who make their commitment.
“Love Notes to Earth” was created by The Sustainability Salon, a not-for-profit group of citizens who focus on the future of our environment and culture.
The project will continue throughout the year and culminate with a celebration at First Night with poetry readings of original works, including one from Utah’s Poet Laureate, based on the theme of “love notes,” interspersed with drummers pulsing the “heartbeat” of the earth.
